According to Article 30 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act, imported food and related products must apply to the Food and Drug Administration for import inspection. Products found to be non-compliant at border inspections will be ordered to be returned or destroyed by the manufacturer. The agency will also increase random inspections, with up to 100% batch-by-batch inspections. The FDA recently released the latest border inspection results, revealing that two of Taiwan's favorite fruits were found to contain excessive pesticide residues. Over 70,000 kilograms of substandard products were returned or destroyed, and are prohibited from entering the market.

Data released by the FDA shows that two manufacturers imported 14,250 kilograms and 17,448 kilograms of fresh durian from Vietnam, respectively. Both were found to contain pesticide residues exceeding regulatory limits, including 0.02 ppm of datronam, 0.02 ppm of methadone, and 0.02 ppm of methadone. According to the "Tolerable Amount Standard for Pesticide Residues", both Dartnam and Met-Aromatic in durian are not allowed to be detected and should be below the quantitative limit of 0.01 ppm of the detection method, which does not comply with the provisions of Article 15, Paragraph 1, Clause 5 of the "Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act".

Another manufacturer imported 16,361 kg of "Fresh Durian (Monthong)" from Vietnam, which was found to contain 0.01 ppm of the pesticide chlorambucil. According to the "Pesticide Residue Permit Standard," chlorambucil is not allowed to be detected in durian and should be below the quantitative limit of 0.01 ppm of the testing method. This does not comply with Article 15, Paragraph 1, Clause 5 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act.

In addition to durian, 21,708 kg of fresh mandarins low seed murcott imported from Australia were found to contain 0.003 ppm of the pesticide fipronil and 0.02 ppm of ipronil. According to the "Pesticide Residue Tolerance Standard," the legal limit for fipronil and its metabolites is 0.001 ppm for other (fruits and vegetables), and the legal limit for ipronil is 0.01 ppm for other (fruits and vegetables). This does not comply with Article 15, Paragraph 1, Clause 5 of the Food Safety and Sanitation Management Act.

What are the potential consequences of accidentally ingesting fruit with excessive pesticide residues? The Food and Drug Administration warns that long-term excessive intake of "Metallol" and "Cromacetin" may affect the nervous system; "Fipronil" and "Iprotone" may cause reactions such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, and in severe cases may affect nerve conduction function; "Dartram" is considered to have potential hepatotoxicity and kidney toxicity, and accidental ingestion may damage the liver.
